The Linuxologist: Microsoft Using Apple’s Macbook Pro In Promotional Material?

  • Joshua · 1 year ago
Well, first ad is *possibly* not an OEM Windows box, but I can't see any full proof that it's an Apple laptop.

As far as the Playstation joysticks go...

    roflpwnt.
  • Anon · 1 year ago
That could be a pc. Apple isn't the only company that makes silver laptops. Also those gaming controllers could be pc controllers. There are many that look just like playstation controllers.
  • Rami Taibah · 1 year ago
True there are other silver PC's out there, but take a look at the keyboard, they have the same shape of a Macbook Pro.

And besides thats not really the point, its a screwup, I mean do you want to tell me that the marketing department was like "alright guys lets do a photoshoot and use a laptop similar to the mac book pro and don't forget the Xbox 360 Playstation look-alike joysticks!!"
  • secretmode · 1 year ago
    thats a macbook pro.
  • churnedrock · 1 year ago
    prove it
  • nsane · 1 year ago
First of all, if that is really a Mac and PS controllers, than I believe the posters are fake.

If not, I have seen laptops with that kind of layout and most PC gaming controllers have a PlayStation controller look.
  • Athel · 1 year ago
The first laptop looks like my Dell laptop from work.

2ndly I don't see any mention of it being a 360 ad, it says pc. And my pc controllers look like a ps2 controller. I'll take pictures of both if you like.
  • coffee · 1 year ago
surely not a photoshoot. they probably just bought some stock photos.
  • Toadkiller · 1 year ago
That's the joy of using stock photography and outsourced marketing.
  • Ahmad Tawakol · 1 year ago
That's definitely a MacBook Pro. You can tell from the keyboard and the lack of windows stickers on it, lol.
  • Charlie Edwards · 1 year ago
The graphic designer used a stock photo. Big deal.
  • Jeremy · 1 year ago
You know how you can definitely tell it's not a PC laptop? It appears to be working correctly and the users seem to be enjoying themselves : )
  • Joshua Kapellen · 1 year ago
That's no doubt a Mac. Look at the thin display enclosure with it's rounded corners. That and they're smiling, people don't usually smile at windows machines. ;)

As for the gamepads, they could be PC peripherals. I have a dual stick controller that looks just like that, I think it's a Logitech dual pad or something like that.

I'm guessing these were stock photos licensed by Microsoft, they certainly look like stock fodder.
  • Joe the Plumber · 1 year ago
Probably just some stock images lifted for the ads.
  • James Tillman · 1 year ago
The controllers look like Logitech Rumblepad 2's.
  • Sarah · 1 year ago
I think it's highly possible that these are just public domain pictures. A lot of companies just grab those and use them without putting too much thought into it. I doubt they did any kind of photo shoot for the booklet.
  • Steve · 1 year ago
Could be Vista running on Bootcamp :-)
  • Jay · 1 year ago
That is absolutely 100% for sure a MacBook Pro in the first pic. I have the same laptop under my fingers this very moment.
  • jon · 1 year ago
that is without doubt a MacBook PRO! bah!
  • Justin · 1 year ago
you can put windows on a mac....
  • Rami Taibah · 1 year ago
The booklet is right here between my hands...Its REAL, trust me :)
  • adam · 1 year ago
they must have bought stock photos. lazy graphic designers
  • lol · 1 year ago
Apple does make the fastest Vista PCs...
  • Rick · 1 year ago
I have a PS2 Guitar Hero controller connected to my USB (i bought a PS2-USB adapter so I could play Frets on Fire). So, even if the ad's fake, using your PS2 controllers is perfectly feasible in a PC.
  • nsane · 1 year ago
Then the second part of my comment remains.
  • 33 · 1 year ago
actually thats a POWERBOOK, not a MacBook Pro
  • chairthrower · 1 year ago
    WOOO DEVELOPERS! WOOO WOOO

    WOO MARKETING! KEY DEMOGRAPHICS. GOING V I R A L. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Whenever you see APPLE OR PS2 THINK OF US KIDS! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!1!H!!
  • Jay · 1 year ago
Lazy or excellent sense of humour?
  • test · 1 year ago
Lot of people use microsoft OS and office in mac too..It runs on most of the computers
  • bduddy · 1 year ago
Uhh... no. That keyboard looks exactly like my keyboard (Dell Inspiron 1525). As for the PS3 joysticks... well, do you think that promo material is meant for people knowledgeable about game console?
  • Cory · 1 year ago
Is it a macbook pro? I just recently saw a Sony laptop that looked strangely like a macbook pro... and I have had PC gamepads that look just like playstation controllers. Of course since Microsoft has a gaming division and produces Xbox controllers for PC...
  • Geronimo Sawyer · 1 year ago
The playstation joystick is bad. But what's wrong with using a MacBook? MacBooks can run Windows too, you know.

In fact, they're probably the sexiest thing to run Windows on!
  • missionsix · 1 year ago
Who cares? you can run vista on a MBP, theres no proof its running OSX.
  • Ryano · 1 year ago
Maybe that happy family installed Bootcamp and Vista on their Macbook Pro
  • superdeedooper · 1 year ago
Actually radio shack sell a gadget that allows you to hook your ps2 controller to your usb port... I used to have one for FFXI
  • lame · 1 year ago
omg! macs don't run windows! oh wait, they can. NO BIG DEAL.
  • Pheonix Wrong · 1 year ago
Not like Vista Can't run on a Mac anyway...

It's probably some subliminal advertising to say, "Hey, if you're going to install Windows on your Mac, it better be Vista!"

    lol
  • Craig · 1 year ago
Yeah, thats a macbook. I have seen that quite a bit actually. I think its because Apple laptops are the only ones out there that actually look nice.
  • Andrew · 1 year ago
You people who are like "OMG MACBOOK LOL" are stupid. Mac books can run windows as well. Ever heard of dual boot?
  • ash · 1 year ago
    It's a MBP.

BTW, I doubt they did a photoshoot for any of it. It's stock photography, they just bought the pictures.
  • ntopics · 1 year ago
I think you're right! I was at an Apple retailer the other day, and that laptop looks just like a Macbook Pro. An interesting point I learned there is that you can run Microsoft Vista on a Macbook Pro as a virtual operating system. Of course they claimed Microsoft Vista would actually run better on their machines versus a PC.

    thanks from Tony
  • Jasonon · 1 year ago
Maybe they are saying that Vista runs great! - Even on Apple hardware.
  • Sic · 1 year ago
That could be a Sony VAIO - they have very similar loooking keyboards. As for the controllers...agreed... who cares if they're not Sony controllers they sure as hell look like them. Mind you they may be playing on the popularity of the PS2, but i doubt it.
  • anon · 1 year ago
It's called stock photography. MSFT marketing dept, or an outside company doing these ads was just lazy in selecting theirs.
  • Zylstra · 1 year ago
There are a few Mac-Lookalike PC's and Laptops out there.

    Nevertheless, Mac does run Vista.
Microsoft doesnt make computers or individual internal components for computers, and thus, it wouldent matter if they had a Mac in their ad.
  • Johnny Reb · 1 year ago
Maybe it's a microsoft jab at Apple--they're using our OS on your crappy laptop!!!
  • G0rbachev · 1 year ago
    ok... its vista not pc...
macs run vista too if youre not an idiot.
  • Dave Linger · 1 year ago
Keep in mind that PS3 controllers are Bluetooth, and therefore can be used with games on Windows Vista. Sure it may have made more sense to use 360 controllers, but it's not like PS3 controllers are wrong.
  • j · 1 year ago
Look folks. Take it from a certified Apple technician and someone who works on Mac's 8 hours a day for a living, that is a MacBook Pro. That is why this family is so happy. Their computer is virus free and their not using Vista.
  • A · 1 year ago
There's only one notebook on the market with silver keys on the board

    MACBOOK PRO
  • Wyatt · 1 year ago
Haha definitely a MacBook Pro. They also ran this ad some time back with what looks like a MacBook:

    http://www.tuaw.com/2007/03/05/microsoft-the-wo...

I'm sure they're just stock photos of people having fun with computers that MS picked up..
  • Jim McDOsh · 1 year ago
Wow, you hit the nail on thehead

    http://www.privacy.cz.tc
  • Tristan · 1 year ago
...Even if it's a bit stupid for an ad, you can perfectly run Vista on Mac hardware (thanks to bootcamp, parrallels, vmware for example) .

Also, I've seen those playstation pads-like ( complete, possibly legal, rip-off the original ps pads) for PC.

But yeah, it's probably a screw up :-)
  • bduddy · 1 year ago
Really? Because I'm typing on silver keys right now, and I don't think Dell makes Macbooks...
  • DC · 1 year ago
can't you run Vista on a Mac?
  • Rami Taibah · 1 year ago
Thats not the point. The point is that marketing is about attention to detail, which is not the case here.
  • scotty · 1 year ago
    one word: bootcamp!
  • Zack Curl · 1 year ago
That most definately is a Macbook Pro, due to the fact that when I zoomed in on the photo, the keys were the same (in fact, I saw what seemed to be the Command key, which looks like an Apple). That and the curve-beveled edge gives it away. It is OEM because of the Genuine logo in the bottom right. Microsoft just can't get enough of Apple.

A good possibility is that Microsoft didn't want to pay for photos, so they got some already made ones and slapped them on. Everybody knows that Apple computers are better anyway...
  • Tom · 1 year ago
It probably has more to do with the fact that some poor schmuck junior designer was given about 5 minutes to create this project because someone in marketing forgot about a deadline, and they simply hopped on Veer or had to hit up a stock image CD already in the library of their design dept. It's all circumstantial. Should it be better though out? Probably. But all too often as designers we're given a minimal amount to work with as opposed to what would be ideal.
  • Anon · 1 year ago
And those are logitech joysticks which look very very similar to playstation ones
  • kyle · 1 year ago
For the laptop, you can run Vista on a Mac, and Microsoft doesn't sell PC hardware

But yea, the PS gamepads should be XBox controllers
  • Garison · 1 year ago
In the real world, when putting together an ad or brochure, the marketing department relies on royalty-free image banks. They do this for many reasons: it's easier and cheaper; they don't have photographers and models on hand; and there are no happy families in Redmond.

The marketing department picked photos that looked good, and implied what they wanted the reader to infer. They didn't pay any attention to the computer equipment in the photos, only the people.
  • jagenigma · 1 year ago
Isn't it okay to use macbooks for vista ads because you can use windows on a Mac?
  • TurboBorland · 1 year ago
Looks like my Dell laptop shaded poorly...
    Inspiron E1505
Also for the Playstation controllers, maybe they're just trying to show that it can handle other platforms? It could also be look more open to other competitors and not just everything must be Microsoft. Makes them look more friendly. How many people are going to point out that, "Hey those look like Playstation controllers, that's not a Microsoft product," in comparison to, "Hey, those look like Playstation controllers, I wonder if I can play Playstation games on the new Windows OS!"?
  • Tom · 1 year ago
    well, i would say it's a mac
  • Brian · 1 year ago
Obviously Microsoft's marketing department uses Macs...
  • Abe · 1 year ago
The laptop displayed in the first ad is indeed Apple's Macbook Pro.
and the Second Picture does have a Playstation Controller. If you zoom into both pictures, you can see the keyboard for the laptop and you can also see the buttons on the remote as well.

    So much for microsoft. =(
  • P4n1ck · 1 year ago
Or one of many recently similar looking Dell Inspiron laptops. The controllers could easily be the newer Logitech rumblepads
  • myself · 1 year ago
My guess is that in both cases their marketing department used stock photography.
  • inaneDrivel · 1 year ago
Thats *clearly* an apple command key next to the space bar.
  • Youranoob · 1 year ago
Windows vista runs on mac, playstation joysticks can be used on widows via a connector. Filed under irrelivant.
  • chicagogreg · 1 year ago
That's what they get for using an outside firm and stock photography!
  • BillGates · 1 year ago
ewwwww you guys got me again and got me good... 'cept I dont care what you turkeys are running yr windows on.
  • Shalimar · 1 year ago
You guys are reading too much into this. These are cheesy stock photos that the designer picked (Possibly as a joke), and who ever was running the show was too stupid to realize what was in these photos. Using stock is way cheaper than commissioning photo shoots.
  • graphic_designer · 1 year ago
    Stock photos.
  • TurboBorland · 1 year ago
If the joke is really about just using stock photos, than the author needs to clarify that. The way I read it made the article sound like just a stab at Microsoft using the iBlade.
  • Paul · 1 year ago
Well, Macs can run Microsoft operating systems. Apple even promotes this versatility.

So if anyone should be embarrassed it should be the PC manufacturers that can make photogenic laptops.
  • mike Davis · 1 year ago
Its stock photography, the ad company is stupid or the MS employee who signed off on this isnt observant
  • Bill · 1 year ago
Nothing new here. I do it all the time and have for decades.
  • Cubed · 1 year ago
That is indeed a MacBook Pro -- I know those keys anywhere as I see them and use them everyday on my 17in MBP. Sure others make silver laptops but there is no other company that makes a keyboard layout like that on a laptop besides Apple.
  • filmoreha · 1 year ago
actually, it could be just a prop. often times they don't use real laptops for these shoots unless its specifically for the actual laptop.

i agree with the ps2 controllers though, lol.
  • Ben · 1 year ago
Stock Photo with a underpaid QA manager...
  • Alex · 1 year ago
You can run windows on a Mac. :)
  • Snikch · 1 year ago
Let's not forget that Macbook's can run Windows natively without any issues...

Microsoft doesn't make hardware so why would they care what hardware it's run on!

Stupid about the PS controllers however...
  • doug · 1 year ago
those are stock images. roflpwnt indeed
  • bleepblop · 1 year ago
well if i recollect correctly, you CAN run vista on a mac :-P
  • techSage · 1 year ago
...And Vista runs on not just MacBooks, but all modern (Intel) Macs, so it may actually be more clever than you think.
  • Matt · 1 year ago
that is my Macbook Pro, No lie..
  • bambam · 1 year ago
i think it's those promotional ad pictures that are taken already and microsoft bought the pic from an ad agency, i don't think there's an actual photoshoot or anything. that's why they can't change the pic...or what's in it...
  • billy · 1 year ago
Macs can run Windows. It's still a sale for Microsoft.
  • agburn · 1 year ago
i own that laptop. i love it. because its a mac.
  • XTabbedOutX · 1 year ago
You do realize Microsoft is a software Co. They do not make hardware (They have M$ Branded hardware, but it is made by mainstream hardware manufactures). They actually make software for the Mac i.e. Office, RDC, Silverlight, etc. Plus everyone knows if you want XP or Vista to run properly you run it on an Apple. You know the fastest Vista has ever ran was on an Apple Computer.
  • Reggio · 1 year ago
    1. It could be a MacBook, but the keyboard doesn't look like one. Apple's keyboard is very distinct, the keys have some space between them. And as far as I know, MacBooks are WHITE and BLACK, haven't seen a silver one. The picture looks more like a Dell to me.

    2. They are called gamepads, not joysticks. :)
  • Church · 1 year ago
That backlight keyboard is almost certainly on a new-ish MacBook. Nice.
  • ctrlalteredmind · 1 year ago
definitely not the best choice of stock photographs for the booklet - even if they are not actually a macbook pro or PS2 controller, hinting at the competition's products is not something you want to do in your own marketing handouts.
  • Reggio · 1 year ago
Sorry, my bad. I didn't notice that it's MacBook Pro you guys are talking about. MacBook Pro is silver :)
  • Your Mom · 1 year ago
I love how Vista still advertises the crap games that have been there since 3.1. Minesweeper! Solitaire! Freecell!!! Let me grab my PS2 controller and get ready for some action!

Windows runs on Macs. The Logitech controllers look just like the Playstation Dualshocks. Nothing wrong with these commercials.
  • Don Solvent · 1 year ago
It is a MacBook Pro. A huge number of MacBook Pros are used to run Vista - it's considered one of the best laptops for the purpose.
  • Anon · 1 year ago
Consumer Reports do say the best computer for Vista is a Macbook Pro.

As for the Playstation controllers... someone's ass is gonna get fired
  • rational · 1 year ago
The PR department likely purchased the images in a 3rd-party package, if not from a contracted PR firm. So, I doubt they accidently used a Mac laptop or Playstation controllers in a photo shoot. Some graphic designer with the company will be losing their job or some PR company losing their contract and rightfully so.
  • Someguy · 1 year ago
That is a sony vaio, not a macbook.

And the last one is defintily ps3 cuz it kicks xbox's arse.
  • Dave Bullock · 1 year ago
Yeah they bought stock photos for this, there is no way they would have done a shoot without PCs in it. Still funny though.
  • bleepblop · 1 year ago
that is why ps3 sales are slipping......hmmm
  • IcyStorm · 1 year ago
Logitech makes PC controllers that look pretty damn similar to the Dual Shock controllers...
  • Cyrious Garnetski · 1 year ago
It may not have been a photoshoot. They may have used stock photos and cropped out the Apple logo.
  • Andrew Jaswa · 1 year ago
Didn't you know you can run Windows on Apple hardware? =P

No, it is not a Macintosh.
    Here is why....
These people appear to have intelligence.

In response to the person above.....
The keyboard has the same shape?
Oh what smashing proof of evidence. It has a QWERTY keyboard just like a Mac!!! You're serious? I would have thought the keyboard would be similar to a Gameboy.

Hmm... last time I checked, you can have Windows on a mac now. So... who cares if it is a macbook pro? There is still a selling point there.

Microsoft makes software for OSX. Their OS's run on Macs. I know people who run Windows on Macs. So what's the big deal again?
  • billy bob · 1 year ago
Their marketing department probably just used stock photos.
  • Joe Casabona · 1 year ago
They probably just used stock photos that looked good. Paying $1 on iStock is much more cost effective than setting up a photo shoot. Still, it's a bit of a marketing faux pas.
  • dave · 1 year ago
um....unless i've gone nuts, i'm fairly certain macbooks can run vista easily these days.
  • Jaeming · 1 year ago
And why not, Macbook Pros can run Vista too. :)
  • AppleSnapple · 1 year ago
It could be a macbook with Windows Vista running on it. God, you people and your hardware. They aren't promoting anything but the software.
  • someone · 1 year ago
There are PC joysticks with same design as PS2, and the ad is talking about PC, not xbox 360
  • Soy · 1 year ago
I'm guessing they are stock photography that their agency/graphics department just bought from a stock site. (without using their heads and making sure it didn't interfere with the client/product they are advertising)
  • factotum218 · 1 year ago
Haha, funniest thing, but uhmm... you can run Vista on a Mac or any of those other Macbook Pro look-alikes. And the Playstation paddles, yeah don't ask my why but they do make usb adapters so all those uber nerds out there can plug 'em in.
Why they went with that angle in the advert, I don't know.
  • carlskg · 1 year ago
That overexcited father *could* be running Vista on his Macbook Pro, ya know.

On second thought. yeah, it's a screwup.
  • Sara · 1 year ago
Actually, a lot of the people that work at Microsoft use Macs. I think the point they are trying to make is that even though you may prefer Mac's hardware, the Microsoft OS is superior. I, myself, use a Macbook with Vista installed on it.
  • Shawn Kent · 1 year ago
Usually when an advertising company puts together this material they do not do a shoot, they purchase the images from stock image companies like corbis.com. There are a few idiots here, the marketing staff at Microshaft who rubber stamped this and the artistic director who led the advertising team into producing the propaganda, shoddy, sloppy work. But what do you expect from a company like Microsoft?
  • Mick · 1 year ago
Microsoft did not do a 'photoshoot',These are probably bought images from a generic photo service. Newspapers use them all the time.

I understand that Vista runs real well on a MBP. So what's all the hubbub about?
  • james · 1 year ago
    macbook pro
  • Keith · 1 year ago
Ok, I think few people could really tell the difference, however for the uber nerd, or the Linux guy that IMHO, pays attention to this kind of stuff, there are subtle differences that are important. Part of that is that Apple does not do generic cases. They may be simple but they always need to do things different. At very least, where are the stickers all over it saying Vista Capable? As little as there is to see, there SHOULD be some kind of branding in sight.

The issue here is marketing. People that do promotional photography want everything to be right. Think of the difference between the picture of the big mac in McDonalds, and that thing you get in a cardboard box. Very different.

Now, I am not a fan of Apple, or their bastardization of the FreeBSD OS, but their cases make anyone at Starbucks look very sophisticated.

I am most certain that is a Mac Book Pro. If it isn't, it is some other mac I don't know about (Hey, it could happen).
  • Dave · 1 year ago
You can use Playstation controllers with a computer...
  • JAMES SLATTERY · 1 year ago
    FAIL!
U guys are fixated on the keys and their color. 2 easy to distinguish ways 2 tell its not a crapbook pro (really the only non-blurry parts of laptop pic):
    * compare top right corner of laptop casing (obv 2 parts meeting up) vs a crapbook's construction (goog imgs)
    * focus on bottom row of keys and area beneath then to the "flat hand area" where glidepoint/mouse is positioned - very much unlike crapbook

While i had a hunch it may be a vaio - that hunch is incorrect after comparing those 2 areas as well.
  • chad · 1 year ago
Look at the keys; that's a macbook pro
  • hank · 1 year ago
maybe they are trying to avoid another anti-trust lawsuit. so they feature everything else that you can do with windows, outside of xbox, etc
  • Shane · 1 year ago
I'm not certain that it is a Mac. But, with Apple using Intel chips in the Macbook Pro, their propaganda machine has been quick to claim it is the ideal laptop for running Vista.

What can I say, its a brave new world and we're all having trouble adjusting.
  • arek · 1 year ago
Vista runs very well on a Mac (Intel, that is).

This is stupid, software is a completely different section to OEM sales and the gaming division. It's the same with google developing stuff for iPhone (i.e. the voice chat) and not releasing it on the android phone. Because Google Software is a completely different area to Google Android.

All new macs now ship with bootcamp which allows them to dual boot Windows next to OSX so they could be using Vista on a MacBook Pro.

Second, there are adapters that connect pretty much any existing controller into USB ports. So using a PS2 controller with your computer is possible.

There was no Microsoft "photoshoot." These are obviously stock images and there are websites full of pictures like these (e.g. http://www.fotosearch.com/photos-images/corpora...). Have you noticed that almost all marketing material you see has the same style of photography?

In this case, its obvious that the graphic designer/marketer who chose these stock images is an idiot and didn't stop and think for a second about what technologies were being represented. That is most definitely a Mac in the first photo.
  • tim · 1 year ago
Sony has similar keyboards and very similar cases to the macbook pro - though often accused of borrowing wholesale from apple. They were the first to have the chicklet keyboard

I'm sure I'm just stating the obvious, but Microsoft is known to use a ton of stock photos in their promotional material, and have screwed up before: http://daringfireball.net/2002/10/microsoft_makeup

I think they just have a hard time finding genuinely happy, photogenic families of Windows users to use for their advertising or something.

So yes, those are probably a Mac and PS controllers in the brochures. It's still retarded of them though.
  • Matt · 1 year ago
The thing is, there probably wasn't a photoshoot. The designer probably just bought whatever stock photo he thought looked the best. Chances are that Microsoft didn't even make this themselves, some marketing firm probably did.
  • mac owner, and ps2 owner · 1 year ago
That's definitely a Macbook Pro, and some PS2 controllers... well at least Microsoft is being honest about the best devices to use, even if it is subtle, or maybe this is the marketer's idea of a good joke. Cause I think its funny. And you know why that family is so funny, cause they're using a computer running Leopard, not Vista!
  • HumanJHawkins · 1 year ago
Since the MacBook Pro is one of the best Windows compatible computers out there, it's not as big of a story as it might have been several years ago.

    The joysticks though. That's funny.

  • Mitch · 1 year ago
Those are stock photography. Some junior designer probably typed "gamer" and "computer" in to Getty and used whatever came up. Microsoft didn't shoot those for their campaign. They probably barely looked at them before approving it for print. I can tell you first hand that the corporate types that approve these messages care more about getting off work at 3pm than doing their job correctly.

Microsoft is a software company. So what if its a Mac laptop? It can still run Windows. Apple is only competing with Microsoft in the strange world of internet fanboy-ism.

and, to be fair, you can run [a legal, money in microsoft's pocket verision of] vista on a macbook just fine.

It's the older MacBook Pro model, but so what? It can run Vista too. My local computer store has a MacBook Pro in their Vista-display booth too.

Most of the time it's not MS that makes the final decision. They take the words and ideas and send it to a marketing firm. The photos for the ad print were more likely stock photos in that if you look in a PS3 ad you may see the same photo. Those photos were not shot exclusively for MS.

  • Wyn · 1 year ago
No mistake, that's a macbook pro and those are PS3 (not 2) controllers.

they are likely stock photos rather than a shoot set up specifically for microsoft. many companies will just buy stock photos from archives for their adds to cut down on the cost of hiring a professional to so a specific shoot for them. i am POSITIVE microsoft would not be stupid enough to make these mistakes in a photo shoot that was done specifically for them.

  • YoJimbo · 1 year ago
That is 100% for sure a MacBook Pro. No doubt about it. Mac laptops are simple, clean, and thus very photogenic. That is why they are used for the majority of stock photographs. Also most graphics houses use Macs so they knew what they were doing, I am pretty sure ;)

Sony's VAIO is the closest thing to a MacBook, and I think that there's are a few Toshibas that have the look as well. There's no excuse for the playstation joysticks though.

  • BC · 1 year ago
I own a MBP and I had a very similar ad today in a PC I bought for family. My add showed more of the notebook and I am 100% positive it is a mbp with the apple logo airbrushed off. The mbp has a very distinct keyboard and trackpad. I think it is much less likely that an illegal knockoff of a patented keyboard would show up than it is likely that an mbp is used in the ad. These companies use purchased stock images. You could probably find the image for sale yourself with a bit of googling.
  • Tim · 1 year ago
They didn't set up a photoshoot, it's called stock photography. Every agency uses it, these are just examples of designers that either didn't notice (doubtful) or didn't care (more likely) that the photos had competing products in them.

Whether or not it's actually a Macbook is kind of beside the point. It isn't clearly a Windows computer. It looks like a Macbook. Why on Earth would they make that decision?

Same with the game controllers. If you're going to put products in your advertisement materials, make them your products. That would be like seeing a billboard for Frosted Flakes with an Orange box. Is it Wheaties? Is it Honey Nut Cheerios? Who cares, it clearly isn't Frosted Flakes.
  • leroy · 1 year ago

It's possible to run Vista on a macbook pro. Maybe they were just showing off their operating system which operates outside a rigid line of under 10 machines (like OSX).

Also, there are PC gamepads that are direct clones of every console on the market today.

Finally, these are usually "stock computer and gaming" images that marketing departments throw together, not always with the end product presented to them first. It is more likely that whatever firm Microsoft contracted just pulled a few images out of their stockpile and were too technically illiterate to realize a problem.

I think the most logical reason for all of this is that these were just stock photos that fit the image the marketing dept was trying to evoke. Most people in marketing departments use Macs, so usually in ads they just use Macs any time they need a computer so if you notice more often than IRL you will see macs in any form of ad where computers are required. the Playstation controllers are probably also stock photos. I don't think this was on purpose.. it was definitely an accident that they overlooked.
  • geebs · 1 year ago
So what you're saying is that you can't run Vista on a Macbook? Nope, I own one, nothing looks quite like a MacBook Pro. You have to remember, Microsoft doesn't put these ads together, AD AGENCIES put them together, and honestly, they use whatever looks nice. Apples just look a lot nicer on television or print than most Windows machines. Then again, you can do dumb things, like the schlocky ads for FinallyFast.com, where they clearly show a white MacBook running Windows and BSODing. Sure, yeah, you can run Windows on a MacBook, but the people in the ad don't look smart enough and it's obviously been post-processed in.
  • Jan D. · 1 year ago
They don't take new pictures for this sort of thing - they use stock photos. So the problem wasn't that they set up a photo shoot using other companies' equipment but rather that someone didn't check the stock photos well enough.

Bootcamp anyone? Also, WinXP for Ps3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Ecr8tWetI

    Maybe they are playing solitare...
  • john · 1 year ago
I dont blame them. you can still run vista on a MBP, i know that if i got one, i would dump OSX for XP
  • eljefe · 1 year ago
Probably is a Mac, but I can almost guarantee that both images are stock photography.
  • d · 1 year ago
those are just black xbox 360 controllers...
  • Josh · 1 year ago
Why are there no links to the original content? I would like to see it in it's original place.

Also, I have worked with many silver Gateway, Dell, and HP laptops that this could be any one of. If these pictures are legitimate, do you really think Microsoft is dumb enough to use a Mac in their ads? I think not. Rumors like this have been going around for ages with fake pics showing Macs in Microsoft presentations, etc.

Also, to agree with Anon, there are many PC joysticks that look identical to the PS controller. Check out logitech's:

It makes sense that they'd pick a more recognizable gaming controller when they're talking about gaming. Because a lot of PC ones are very generic looking.

And It might be a mac, might not be, but at the end of the day you're the retard that wasted time pretending its funny. Good jorb.
  • carl · 1 year ago
So what if it is a MBP?
last time I heard, Microsoft dosen't manufacture computers, just operating systems and software.
Vista runs on a MBP just fine.

    maybe i'm missing something.
  • bob · 1 year ago
that is a macbook pro. Mine is just like the one pictured. Yes there are other silver laptops in the market, but NONE like the Macbook pro. The design is very distinct and recognizable. you'd know this if you had one.
  • Brady · 1 year ago
You can run Windows on a Mac now - fair game! :-)

Perhaps because Joshua's picture is displayed to the top right of his post? Of course that's the common sense answer, and who needs common sense, right?
  • xanni · 1 year ago

Ricky is right, that's his picture on his post. I don't know many other Joshuas that would be using a picture of my brother for kicks.

Hey, maybe they are running a Windows virtualization program on their Mac! It's the thought that counts, right?
  • mistercow.pnoy · 1 year ago
also, no doubt that the ads themselves were made on macs.
  • Adam · 1 year ago
    Windows runs on Mac
    PS3 is more popular then x-box 360.

Even they can admit these things!

    Dear Microsoft,

    Fire your marketing division.
  • r · 1 year ago
Totally a Macbook Pro. I actually use a Playstation controller on my PC tho, so I don't really see the big deal in that being n the picture. IMHO the PS1/2 controller shape fits my hands best, and i'm sure some users prefer that type of controller regardless of the console/system. Hell, I've seen PS1/2 controllers modded for the xbox and the 360, just 'cause users like them better, so big deal.

J: Macs are not virus free. This is a common misconception that is propagated by those who "work on macs 8 hours a day". i actually just spent three hours removing a virus from a mac last week, not to mention their susceptibility to dns hijacking which occurs constantly on our network.

while macs are less likely to get viruses, to propagate this belief that they are "virus-free" is misleading not only to owners, but to technicians who don't find these things out for themselves until they have a virus staring them in the face and have no idea of how to remove it because "macs don't get virii".

Macs have their places just as PCs, but please don't spread this "no virus" propaganda. It's just a ridiculous supposition to any educated technician. Users love their Mac because they don't have to worry about as much machine-management as windows users, who in turn don't have to worry about a much machine-management as linux-distro users.

This is all user preference, some like the hands-off approach, some like to feel they have more control, some like the middle-ground. All OSes have their places, depending on the user's knowledge and needs. Quit being a fan-boy.
  • Frank · 1 year ago
lol you are just an apple fanboy j...
well, so am i but you're saying that you work for Apple. How many ppl on the internet have said that? especially on youtube!
I will never believe that some random guy on the internet who says that he works for apple. ok maybe some of the ppl who say it actually do, but most are apple fanboys and i am 100% sure that you are an apple fanboy who lies about working for apple…
  • Frank · 1 year ago
ummm, well kinda it would be like you were doing an ad for the wii but instead of a wii it would be a commodore 64 or a banana or something

    so?

A: "No I like THIS stock photo the best"
    B: "But sir/miss!"
A: "No, I like THIS one and that's final!"

All I can say is, someone just got fired.

Oh my god... remember in episode 9 of Star Trek when Spok wore a watch in scene 17?

    Get a life you loser.
  • Bret · 1 year ago
Could be a MacBook Pro or a PowerBook. There isn't quite enough detail to tell. I'd bet it's a Mac in a stock photo from somebody who doesn't bother to pay enough attention to detail. Very small potatoes... but it still makes me laugh.
  • Bret · 1 year ago
Give us the details on this "Mac virus". That would make this an important page with 10,000 DIGGs. I don't think you know what you're talking about.
  • dfsg · 1 year ago
actually, it is a really good ad, EVEN MAC USERS USE WINDOWS!!
  • Enso105 · 1 year ago
Macbook is just more photogenical. Sleek and cute. Why wonder?
Nobody believes Vista's power anymore. Apple's out there to buy Microsoft's shares and take over the world.
  • skemez1 · 1 year ago
Read edit #2 at the top before you call people names. then look up the meaning of ignorant.
  • Kirby Oak · 1 year ago
You know, in the picture that Skemez1 provided, there's a distinct lack of an Apple logo on the computer. Isn't it possible that that's just supposed to be a stock photo of a generic laptop? Beyond that, I'm sure that it's better for Microsoft to suggest the hardware of their competitor than get in trouble with companies like Dell, HP, etc. for favoritism of a certain laptop manufacturer. Really though, since the material that these pictures are from comes with the software, it means you've already purchased it, so it doesn't make much of a difference if they hint at Apple or Sony.
  • Kilburn Hall · 1 year ago
If it's for Vista its not a Mac- more likely an ACER which looks exactly like a Mac.

Forget Windows altogether and just buy yourself a MAC.
  • r · 1 year ago
    just one example: http://www.sophos.com/pressoffice/news/articles...

and an example of the DNS hijacking: http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/trojan_osx_dnsc... while not technically a "virus" per se, it is a type of malware (trojan), which is commonly referred to as a virus by laymen.

Also, this exploit: http://www.f-secure.com/vulnerabilities/SA30776 Which could be used to do all kinds of nasty things. also, not a virus, but if a user was affected by something such as this they could easily think they have a virus.

Plus, there was the Mac.Simpsons virus back in '01, and Esperanto in '97... and the list goes on. While they are rare, they do exist. I believe you have been mislead by this "mac=no virus" b.s. as well. do some research before making false claims. This isn't big news. Anyone that has actually been "in the industry" knows this. There won't be any extra diggs, this isn't big news except maybe to fanboys, which will just cover their ears(eyes?) and run away screaming about their happy place anyways.

    So?

    Get a life man..
    that's sick..
  • Sami · 1 year ago
Please share the details of the virus with us. Maybe we can help you. It sounds more like there's a problem between the chair and the keyboard. Macs do not get viruses.
  • Spyd3rs · 1 year ago
Now that's what I call sloppy.
  • Michael · 1 year ago
Well, the image is too poor and it is also blended/faded. I do not see any "ports", all I see are some keys and I think the color is white (could be silver). Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. In any case, if you remove the operating system of a mac you pretty much have a PC. Macs use Intel processors now, their Ram is (I believe) PNY or Micron, and I can't remember if their video cards are ATI or nVidia but that is exactly what my computer is.
  • blublu · 9 months ago
    They bought stock images?
